The 4Cs of Diamond Jewelry

Do you know what are the 4Cs that you should consider when buying a diamond accessory? Here we explain it to you.

When looking for diamond accessories, it is essential to consider the 4Cs: cut, tone, transparency and weight. However, what exactly should you look for in these attributes? Before finalizing your jewelry selection, it is crucial to understand the importance of each of the diamond jewelry characteristics.

Characteristics of diamond jewelry

Cut

When it comes to diamonds, the «cut» of a stone usually refers to its depth, which directly impacts the amount of light that bounces off of it. Ideally, a diamond’s depth should be medium in order to reflect the most light possible, creating an optical illusion of a larger, more radiant jewel. Conversely, diamonds that are too shallow or too deep can appear darker or smaller, and are therefore less valuable.

Color

The second characteristic of diamond jewelry to consider is the color. Color grade is graded on an alphabetical scale from D to Z, ranging from colorless to light yellow. Colorless diamonds, with a grade of D-F, are considered the most valuable. Mid-range jewels, meanwhile, exhibit only subtle hints of yellow, barely noticeable.

Clarity

Diamonds are created under intense pressure and high temperatures, which results in the presence of inclusions, or tiny imperfections, within each stone. A diamond’s clarity grade is determined by the number of detectable inclusions that are visible to the naked eye or under magnification. The clarity scale ranges from Flawless, which has no visible inclusions, to Slightly Included and Included, which have varying levels of visible imperfections.

Carat

A diamond’s carat weight is determined by its mass, with one carat being equivalent to 1/5 of a gram, or 100 points. While larger diamonds are generally more valuable, carat weight doesn’t always correspond directly to size. Ultimately, the cut of a diamond has the greatest impact on its value, beauty, and sparkle, and should be prioritized when selecting a high-quality stone that fits within your budget. Once you’ve chosen the best cut you can afford, you can consider the other three Cs according to your preferences and budget.
